The American Association of Wildlife Veterinarian (AAWV) keeps an updated student opportunities board with different student opportunities in wildlife medicine/rehab, free-ranging wildlife health, and more.
The California Department of Fish & Wildlife and the Karen C. Drayer Wildlife Health Center offer a four-to-six-week externship in Wildlife Medicine to senior veterinary students.
Veterinary preceptorships are available to senior level veterinary students for a 6 to 8 week period. The program emphasizes field immobilization techniques, preventive medicine, conservation-oriented research and an international perspective.
The goal of the ODFW veterinary student externship is to introduce 4th year veterinary students via a clinical rotation, to the profession of agency-based wildlife veterinary medicine and provide a hands-on understanding of the types of tasks and activities our wildlife veterinarians engage in.
Successful applicants should be registered in a course or program that requires a practicum placement in animal husbandry or wildlife rehabilitation.
The Rocky Mountain Wildlife Veterinary Externship is a collaborative program for 4th-year veterinary students offered by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, the National Park Service, and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department.
This collaborative approach to veterinary student training in the Rocky Mountain region is designed to provide students with broad exposure to the numerous wildlife veterinary professionals present in the region. Student projects will be designed with host agencies to provide a real-world experience for the student and contribute to agency missions.
