Seeking two highly motivated individuals to join a research group on Arctic Wildlife Health. These positions are based at the University of Calgary Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
Veterinary preceptorships are available to senior level veterinary students for a 6 to 8 week period. The program emphasizes field immobilization techniques, preventive medicine, conservation-oriented research and an international perspective.
The goal of the ODFW veterinary student externship is to introduce 4th year veterinary students via a clinical rotation, to the profession of agency-based wildlife veterinary medicine and provide a hands-on understanding of the types of tasks and activities our wildlife veterinarians engage in.

Successful applicants should be registered in a course or program that requires a practicum placement in animal husbandry or wildlife rehabilitation.
The intensive 2-week course is aimed at a level appropriate for recent graduates or students in medical and veterinary schools around the world, as well as other early career health, agriculture, environmental sciences, and conservation professionals. Participants are immersed in settings that illustrate the health of people, animals and the environment are inextricably linked.
Intern will learn about the diagnostics and instruments commonly used in a veterinary laboratory specializing in Alaskan marine mammals, birds and fish. Skills and procedures learned will include: blood analysis, urine and fecal analysis, total and fecal coliform water quality analysis, sample collection during animal exams or necropsy, and maintaining veterinary records and sample inventory.
Interns will gain experience in the rescue and rehabilitation effort of Alaska’s stranded wild marine mammals and birds. In addition to learning animal restraint and husbandry skills, interns are expected to work with the public in-person while out in the field and over the phone in a professional and courteous manner.
