Under the direction of the Wildlife Division Deputy Director, the Wildlife Division Veterinarian is responsible for developing and managing all aspects of the Division Wildlife Health Program including: field operations, policy development and implementation, wildlife health related research and training, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certification compliance (including staff training and oversight), providing guidance and consultation to staff on humane animal care best practices, and other veterinarian duties as required. Coordinates extensively with other Wildlife Health Program staff. Work includes but is not limited to: overseeing and coordinating veterinary activities and disease control functions, providing consultative services, investigating incidents of animal disease, disseminating information on disease control and eradication, designing and conducting field studies to collect biological samples (such as blood) for disease surveillance, outbreak/mortality event investigations, health assessments of wild species, overseeing the capture and chemical immobilization/anesthetic procedures used, and conducting necropsies (animal autopsies) on animals found dead to determine causes of mortality and to screen for important diseases.
